Oldsmobile . Purpose of a CamshaftThe camshaft has been part of the internal combustion automotive engine ever since Nikolaus Otto demonstrated one in 1876. The camshaft has two or three duties, depending on where it is mounted in the engine. The placement of the camshaft influences engine performance. The camshaft is essential to engine operations. Definition of a Camshaft The camshaft is a straight, gear-driven shaft. The lobes that protrude from the shaft are "cams." The purpose of the camshaft is to operate the intake and exhaust valves of the engine. The engine needs the cam to operate in this manner so it can intake the fuel/air mixture into the cylinder through the intake valve and expel it out of the cylinder through the exhaust valve at the correct time. The intake and exhaust action is relative to the position of the engine pistions. The rotational action of the camshaft allows each lobe to operate a tappet (lifter) or a pushrod. There is one lobe for each valve. Pushrod Configuration The camshaft is located in the middle of the engine block of many engines, whether they are in-line four cylinders, V-6s or V-8s. The camshaft lobes operate pushrods that are directly connected to a rocker. The rocker operates intake and exhaust valves. The camshaft also functions as an auxiliary drive shaft for powering the oil pump, and, until the 1990s, the distributor. According to Andre' Roy of All Par.com, the V-type camshaft drive is shorter and provides better accuracy in timing over the overhead cam engines. Overhead Cam Configuration Whenever the engine has the camshaft located in the cylinder head, it is known as the overhead cam (OHC) configuration. The camshaft is mounted directly over the intake and exhaust valves. The camshaft will directly operate the valves without the need of pushrods and rockers. The lobes of the camshaft make contact with tappets, which open and close the valves. This feature is seen is smaller or high-performance engines. According to the Reader's Digest Complete Car Care Manual, the overhead cam allows the engine to produce more power than comparable engines with the pushrod configuration. Camshaft Position Sensors Since the 1990s, the camshaft has been used to monitor engine RPMs and the position of the pistons. The camshaft position sensor conducts the monitoring. The engine control module (ECM) reads the information from the sensor. The ECM uses the information from the camshaft sensor to control the fuel injection timing. Camshaft as a Pollution Control Device In the 1970s, the camshaft was designed to aid the emission system. The camshaft closes the exhaust valve early. This helps control pollution by allowing some of the exhaust gases to remain in the cylinder. The gases will mix with the incoming fuel charge. This dilution of the fuel charge and lowering of peak combustion temperatures controls the pollution output of the engine. The effect takes place while the engine RPMs are low, such as at idle or while the throttle is partially open. Resources2 CarPros.com: How Does a Camshaft Work?
Oldsmobile . Facts on the Honda CRF 150 RThe Honda CRF150R is literally a motorcycle in a class of its own. Originally announced in 2006, its four-stroke engine is one of a kind in its class, where all other mini-motocross bikes are powered by two-stroke engines. The bike initially flew off the assembly line, however recently sales momentum has slowed with a general lack of competitive success for this model segment-challenger. History Announced by Honda's motorcycle division on September 6, 2006 as a 2007 model-year offering, the CRF150R was met with critical praise, pre-orders, and a long waiting list. The machine has remained relatively unchanged through 2010, with only a new black plastic fairing color option being made available for the 2009 model year. Features The current CRF150R has its bespoke 149cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine mated to a close-ratio five-speed transmission. Power is delivered to the rear wheel by a 420 chain. The suspension utilizes fully adjustable Showa forks and rear shock, with 10.8 inches of travel afforded to both wheels. The most popular version uses a 17-inch front and a 14-inch rear wheel. At only 188 pounds wet, and featuring a 34-inch seat height, the CRF150R is a class leader for the mini-motocross segment. Benefits The primary advantage of the four-stroke CRF150R over the competition is its wide, linear power band. This expansive power also eliminates the need for excessive shifting, hence reducing wear on the clutch. The additional weight that the bike carries around due to the larger engine and more substantial frame than those found on other bikes in the class mean that it has a more steady and refined ride. Considerations Some smaller riders may find that the CRF150R is slightly heavy and somewhat ungainly, due to the additional weight being located high off the ground. Others have found that the force required to pull the clutch is excessive and can lead to fatigue. In some situations, even the excellent responsiveness of the engine can be a hindrance when tight, technical situations must be negotiated with finesse on a track. Potential The CRF150R has the uniqueness and pedigree to define a new competitive class for mini-motocross. It remains unique in the marketplace four years after its introduction, a rare circumstance given the usual perpetual goal of other market players to target releases of their own competitive products just the following year. *Do the job systematically Always use a system when you do an oil change: Do each part of the job in order, and don't change that order from job to job. This may sound unduly restrictive if you like to improvise, but if you ignore this advice, you may find that you've added the new oil before replacing the oil drain plug or changing the filter. In either case, you wind up with your brand-new oil all over the ground and not enough oil in the engine to drive to the store for more. Also, the minute you replace the oil drain plug, always tighten it completely and put in the new oil. That way, you won't forget to put in the new oil. (Don't laugh; people have done that and have ruined their engines in a couple of miles.) 752

If you do have to jack up your car, read Chapter 1 to be sure that Chapter 15: Changing Your Oil you do so safely. Block the wheels, use jack stands, and don't jack the car up too high, or the oil may not drain out of the oil pan completely. If you can, jack up the car so that the oil drain plug is at the lower end of the oil pan. In any case, be sure your gearshift is in Park or Neutral with the emergency brake on before you work on it. Place all the stuff you're going to use within easy reach so that you don't have to jump up and run around to the other side of the vehicle in the middle of the job. Now follow these easy steps to change your oil and oil filter: 1. Warm up your engine for two or three minutes so that the gook gets churned up and can flow out of the engine easily. Oldsmobile . Saturn Relay. * You donY want the engine so hot that you burn yourself. When it is slightly warm, shut off the engine. 2. Use a light to look under your car. You should be able to see and reach a large nut or plug located under the oil pan at the bottom of the engine. (See Figure 15-6.) This is the oil drain plug. It unscrews with the aid of an adjustable wrench. If the plug is too hot to touch comfortably, let the car cool off for a while longer. If you can't reach your oil drain plug easily and you still want to do this job yourself, you'll have to either crawl under your car to reach the plug or jack up the car. Figure 15-6: The drain plug is located at the bottom of your oil pan. 3. Push the basin with the plastic bag opened inside it (or the oil-change container) under the oil drain plug so that it can catch the oil. The oil may not come down vertically to start with; it may come out sideways from the direction the drain plug is facing. Allow for that when you place the drain pan. 4. Use your adjustable wrench to unscrew the oil drain plug until it's almost ready to come out. Then protect your hand with the dirty rag or some paper towels and give the plug a last quick turn by hand to release it. Pull your hand away quickly so that you don't get oil all over yourself. 2 A Q Part III: Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System Oldsmobile . What type of gas do you use for your car?

The oil now drains out of your engine into the container (remember the gasket, if you're going to reuse it). While the oil drains, get out from under the car and take a look under the hood. 5. Remove the cap from the oil filler hole at the top of your engine. This large cap is easy to recognize: It lifts or screws right off, revealing a largish hole. 6. Unscrew the oil filter, using an oil filter wrench if you can't do it by hand. The oil filter looks like a tin can that's screwed onto the outside of your engine (see Figure 15-7).
